Checking accounts, particularly free checking accounts, are often treated as simple, no-frills transaction tools. That’s all many banking customers are looking for in a checking account, which is why so many overlook potentially helpful features that could simplify their finances.
If you have not reviewed your account settings recently, 2026 could be the year to do so. You may discover tools that can make managing bills, spending, and savings easier.
Direct deposit does more than replace a paper paycheck. It creates timing consistency.
When income is deposited automatically, you can align your deposit schedule with recurring expenses such as rent, utilities, loans, or subscriptions. This reduces the gap between when money arrives and when obligations are due.
If your employer offers split direct deposit, adjusting payroll allocations every time your savings goals change can require paperwork or coordination with your employer.
An alternative is to schedule automatic transfers within your account settings for the same day or the day after your deposit posts (if your pay is deposited consistently on time). This keeps your full paycheck visible in checking, while still moving a set amount into savings.
Because you control transfers inside your account, you can increase, decrease, or pause them as your goals shift. For example, if you want more savings for Christmas this year, or you want to start saving for a car or home down payment, you could schedule a monthly automatic transfer of $100 into a Christmas Club account every month and $100 into a separate money market account.
Making the conscious decision (and remembering) to set money aside every month isn’t always easy. Scheduling monthly transfers to occur after a direct deposit can be a great way to make consistent progress toward goals.
Our online banking platform includes bill pay functionality that allows you to manage payments in one place.
Instead of writing checks or remembering to log into multiple company websites each month to pay invoices, you can schedule one-time or recurring payments through our online and mobile banking tools. Recurring payments are particularly useful for fixed expenses such as insurance premiums or rent payments.
Online bill pay also allows you to view upcoming scheduled payments alongside your current balance. Seeing what is already scheduled to leave your account can make it easier to evaluate new purchases before committing to them.
Digital banking includes customizable alerts designed to provide real-time account awareness. Common alert options include:
These alerts function as informational safeguards. A low balance alert can provide advance notice before scheduled payments clear. A deposit notification confirms that funds have been received. Transaction alerts provide immediate awareness of purchases or withdrawals.
Alerts can be delivered by email, text, or in-app notification, depending on your preferences.
OnPath’s mobile banking app includes debit card management tools for checking accounts with a linked debit card.
If you temporarily misplace your debit card, you can lock it within digital banking. Once the card is located, it can be unlocked without requesting a replacement. This helps reduce disruption if a card is misplaced at home, at work, or in a vehicle.
You can also monitor recent transactions in real time, making it easier to confirm authorized purchases and review account activity.
OnPath offers Overdraft Protection, but it must be manually set up by the member. When configured, funds are automatically transferred from a linked savings account, money market account, or line of credit if your checking balance reaches zero. A $3 fee applies to each automatic transfer.
If Overdraft Protection is not set up, or if the linked account does not have sufficient funds, Courtesy Pay may act as a secondary safety net for eligible members. Courtesy Pay is discretionary and carries a $32 fee per paid overdraft transaction. The account must be brought back to a positive balance within 35 days.
Members can configure these features to best fit their preferences. Some members prefer linking a savings account for lower-cost transfers. Others may choose to rely on transaction declines rather than enable any overdraft services.
If you have questions about how Courtesy Pay applies to your account, OnPath can clarify your current configuration and available options.
OnPath’s mobile banking app includes mobile deposit functionality, allowing eligible checks to be deposited remotely.
For members who occasionally receive paper checks, mobile deposit can reduce delays and eliminate the need for a branch visit. Faster submission of deposits can also help avoid timing issues when bills are due close to payday.
Now may be a good time to familiarize yourself with the OnPath Credit Union digital banking dashboard if you have not explored your checking account settings recently. You may discover new features that can make your life easier.
