The envelope method: A simple way to stick to your budget

If you’ve ever set a budget, only to find yourself overspending by the end of the month, you’re not alone.  Sticking to a plan can be tough, but there is a better way.

Enter: the money envelope system.

It’s a tried-and-true method that helps you stay accountable, cut back where needed, and actually see your progress.

💡 Already have a monthly budget you love? Skip to step 2.

1. Determine your monthly income and expenses

Track all your income and expenses for a few months. Save receipts, jot down purchases, and note your pay stubs.

Once you’ve got a clear picture, you’ll know exactly how much you have left over after covering essentials like your mortgage, insurance, and savings.

2. Make a plan for each category

Look back at your spending and divide your discretionary income into categories that fit your lifestyle: think food, gas, entertainment, or clothing.

Be honest about where you tend to overspend, and decide where you can trim back.

3. Set up your envelopes

Here’s where the magic happens. Label an envelope for each category and place the month’s cash inside. Every dollar has a home, and you’ll instantly know what’s available for each area.

4. Stick with it

Headed to the grocery store? Take only what’s in your “groceries” envelope. No swiping cards, no borrowing from other categories, just a simple, visual way to stay on track.

If funds run low, get creative!

Use pantry staples, shop sales, or challenge yourself to stretch what you’ve got.

5. Celebrate your wins

End the month with money left in an envelope? Treat yourself!

Whether that’s a dinner out, rolling the extra cash into next month, or setting it aside for something special, you’ve earned it.

Make it your own!

  • Use a small accordion file folder instead of individual envelopes. It’ll be easier to keep track of your envelopes when they’re all in one place, and it’s sturdier than paper envelopes.
  • Want more wiggle room? Create a small “emergency” envelope for unexpected expenses.
  • Looking to free up extra cash? Review your fixed bills and see where you can cut costs, like finding cheaper insurance or trimming subscriptions.

Budgeting doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the envelope system, you’ll have a clear, simple way to take control of your money, one envelope at a time.
