New Member Digital Banking Checklist

Opening a new account at OnPath Credit Union gives you access to more than competitive rates. It also provides secure online and mobile banking tools that allow you to manage your accounts from anywhere.

Taking 15 to 20 minutes to configure your online and mobile banking tools can prevent future login issues, missed alerts, overdraft surprises, or security gaps.

How to Set Up Digital Banking

Log In and Confirm Access

Start by signing in to online banking from a desktop or laptop. Then download the mobile banking app and log in there as well. Confirm:

  • Your username and password work correctly
  • Your email address and mobile phone number are accurate
  • All newly opened accounts appear in your dashboard

Resolving issues before you start moving money around, receiving direct deposit, or setting up bill pay can prevent future headaches.

Strengthen Your Security Settings

Security should be configured before you begin regular transactions. Review and enable:

  • Multi-factor authentication
  • Biometric login on your mobile device, such as fingerprint or facial recognition
  • Updated security questions
  • Account recovery email and phone number

Card Control in the mobile app can be used to lock your debit card immediately or report it as lost or stolen. You can access Card Control through the “More” menu for immediate protection if needed.

Enroll in eStatements

Electronic statements centralize your records and reduce mail delays. Inside online banking:

  • Enroll in eStatements
  • Confirm where statements are stored
  • Review notification settings for when new statements are posted

Set Up Account Alerts

Alerts are one of the most effective tools for monitoring activity. Consider enabling:

  • Low balance alerts
  • Deposit notifications
  • Large transaction alerts
  • Debit card purchase notifications

These notifications provide real-time visibility and can help you respond quickly if something looks unusual.

Activate and Configure Your Debit Card

If your account includes a debit card:

  • Activate the card as instructed
  • Set or change your PIN
  • Review card control options within digital banking

Set Up Direct Deposit

If you plan to use the account for payroll or benefits:

  • Locate your routing and account numbers inside online banking
  • Provide that information to your employer or benefits provider
  • Monitor your first deposit to confirm it posts correctly

Direct deposit typically takes one or two pay cycles to become active.

Link External Accounts

Connecting external bank accounts allows you to move money efficiently. You may need to:

  • Enter routing and account numbers
  • Verify small test deposits
  • Monitor transfer timing so you know what to expect in the future

This step ensures you can transfer funds when needed without delay.

Schedule Automatic Transfers or Payments

Digital banking allows you to automate key financial habits. Consider:

  • Recurring transfers to savings
  • Automatic loan payments
  • Scheduled bill payments

The benefits of automating key financial tasks, such as automatically having your income deposited in your checking account or setting up automatic payments for bills and your credit card, won’t just make your life easier. The more those types of transfers are automated, the less likely you are to miss payments and be charged late fees or interest rates.

Review Overdraft and Account Preferences

Before relying on the account for everyday transactions:

  • Review overdraft protection and Courtesy Pay coverage options
  • Set up or opt-out of the protections you do or don’t want
  • Understand any qualification requirements tied to your account type

This step is more important than people realize. Not everyone wants to utilize protections that have fees attached. If you do want to enable overdraft protection, you need to choose a savings account or line of credit to link to your checking account for overdraft transfers.

Test a Small Transaction

Finally, complete a small transfer or debit card purchase. Confirm that:

  • The transaction posts correctly
  • Alerts trigger as expected
  • Your available balance updates accurately

This confirms your digital tools are functioning properly.

Digital banking is designed to give you visibility and control over your accounts. Taking a few minutes to secure your login, configure alerts, and automate key features ensures your membership starts smoothly and stays that way.

Make the Most of Your Online and Mobile Banking Options

From transferring money and depositing checks faster to getting less paper mail and reducing the risk of overdrafts and missed bills, digital banking can reduce risks and simplify your financial life. Become a member of OnPath and take advantage of digital banking today.
