Why Is My Car Loan Rate So High?

high car loan rates

Most people do not realize their auto loan rate might be high until they have something to compare it to. Maybe they see a lower rate advertised, or a friend mentions the great rate they got on a vehicle loan.

You have similar jobs. Similar incomes. Similar lifestyles. So why is your rate three points higher?

The answer usually is not one single thing. Your credit score matters, but so does the vehicle, loan term, down payment, overall budget, and where you got the loan.

Your Credit Score Plays a Big Role

Your credit score helps lenders understand how you have managed debt in the past. They take into account your:

  • Payment history
  • Credit card balances
  • Late payments
  • Other borrowing habits

In general, higher credit scores help borrowers qualify for lower rates, while lower scores may result in higher rates.

Your credit history tells part of your financial story, but not all of it.

The Vehicle Matters Too

Your loan rate is not based entirely on you.

The vehicle matters as well. Newer vehicles often qualify for lower rates than older vehicles because they typically hold their value better.

Stronger resale value can mean less risk for the lender. If you default, they can get most of their money back by reselling a new-ish vehicle.

Your Loan Term Can Affect the Rate

Lower monthly payments may fit easier into your budget. But it comes with a tradeoff.

Buyers get that lower payment by spreading the loan out over more months. Longer loan terms can sometimes come with higher rates.

Even if the rate isn’t that much higher, you will be paying the interest for more months, which will result in a higher total loan cost.

Your Down Payment Can Help

A larger down payment reduces how much you need to borrow.

That also lowers the lender's risk and will often improve the terms you are offered.

The less you need to finance, the stronger the loan may look from a lender's perspective.

Your Overall Financial Picture Matters

Credit scores are important, but lenders typically look at more than a three-digit number.

They may also consider a borrower’s:

  • Income
  • Other debt
  • Employment history
  • Recent borrowing activity

How well you have managed debt in the past and your overall financial picture can both affect the loan terms you qualify for.

That is another reason two borrowers with similar credit scores can receive different rates.

Where You Get Your Loan Matters

Not every lender offers the same rates or loan programs.

Dealerships, banks, and credit unions may all have different approval requirements and financing options. That is why shopping around can sometimes lead to a better deal.

When comparing offers, look at:

  • The interest rate
  • The monthly payment
  • The loan term
  • Any fees
  • Available refinancing options

Even a small difference in rate can add up over the life of a loan.

Your Rate Is Not Always Permanent

The rate you received when you first bought your vehicle is not necessarily the rate you are stuck with forever.

Credit scores improve. Debt gets paid down. Income changes.

You can usually refinance an auto loan that made sense a few years ago but is not your best option today.

See Whether a Better Auto Loan Option Is Available

If your circumstances have changed since you first financed your vehicle, or you just want to find out if you can get a lower rate now, it may be worth exploring your options.

OnPath Credit Union offers new vehicle loans, used vehicle loans, and refinancing solutions designed to help members find financing that fits their goals and budget.

Our current Summer of '26 Promotion allows qualifying borrowers to get $260 cash back1, 0.26%2 off their qualifying rate, and no payments for 90 days3 on a new, used, or refinanced vehicle. Apply online to find out if you qualify.

1The $260 cash back offer will be deposited into the member's share account no later than 30 days after the loan closes.

2The offer of 0.26% rate reduction is applied to the approved qualified rate, with a floor rate of 5.24% Annual Percentage Rate (APR)*. Offer valid on select OnPath auto loans. Not all loans will qualify for this reduction.

3The 90-day no-payment offer defers the first payment for 90 days from the loan origination date. Interest accrues during the deferral period.
